Web 2.0 Application to Libraries

Abram, Stephen. Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and Librarian 2.0: preparing for the 2.0 world. SirsiDynix OneSource. Vol. 2, No. 1, January 2006. Available online http://www.imakenews.com/sirsi/e_article. Retrieved July 11, 2011.
Abstract:
The article briefly explains what Web 2.0/Library 2.0/Librarian 2.0 is, its underlying concepts, features and principles.
Three Things I Learned From My Reading Assignment:
1. Library 2.0 is a user-centered system; encouraging user participation and interaction in a technology-driven environment.
2. In Library 2.0, the library becomes "human" because it makes the library a social and emotionally engaging center for learning and experience (OCLC).
3. Various Web 2.0 technologies/tools (e.g. blogs and blogging, wikis, RSS, etc.)
Application:
As librarians, it is imperative that we go with the flow of technology. It is a must for us to keep updated with the current trends and technology in library services. Always be open to changes and don't be afraid to experiment and take initiatives. Library 2.0 is one way to invigorate our services and interaction with our users.

Library and Internet for Research

Web research guide: library vs. Internet. [USA] : Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Pub. Available online
Abstract:
Both library and Internet serve almost the same purpose and are highly effective and efficient means by which students locate information. However, as time goes by and the world moves to new innovations and directions, issues concerning the effect of Internet to libraries continue to arise. The issue of Internet being a substitute and a replacement to library as a research tool and venue is now being debated upon.
Undoubtedly, each has its own advantages and disadvantages as well as factors to consider in discerning what's best for research. By being aware of these, one can make the right choice at the same time enhance the quality of his/her research.
Three Things I Learned From My Reading Assignment:
1. For effective research, one needs to use both the libraries and the Internet. It requires that you know and examine their pros and cons .
2. Libraries got a favorable response as an effective tool and venue for research considering the following factors: accuracy, cost, organization, service and archival content while preference in conducting research in the Internet is due to accessibility and currency factors.
3. The Internet is just one research and learning tool that can be used in addition to traditional library sources in contrast to the notion that it is will soon be a replacement to a library.
Application:
Being a librarian entails an adequate knowledge of how to conduct research effectively. Therefore, it is my responsibility to teach our students on how to be resourceful, patient, balanced and ingenious to achieve the best research results. As a researcher, I will be more open to changes and services offered by both libraries and the Internet. As a self-confessed non-techie, I am willing to learn and explore new challenges and advancements brought by technology.

information.
2. Privacy concerns - think first before you share your personal information.
3. Responsible use of information.

As a school librarian, I will orient or educate our students in terms of proper use of the computer and the Internet. I will make sure that they are getting the right information at the right place, at the right time and format. I will also remain keen in observing their attitude towards responsible utilization of information and technology.
